This is a 23 piece set of 1950s vintage metal kitchen cabinets by St. Charles Mfg. Co. There is a paper label affixed to one base stand listing the manufacturer and architect for the house-- see below for information about both. For context, there are also pictures of the cabinets as previously installed (up to ceiling height) included at the end of the photographs.

The set features 19 upper cabinets, 2 base cabinets, and 2 full length pantries. The pantries have several roll-out shelves inside and a few cabinets were originally wired for lighting. The cabinet fronts have been repainted off-white over the original color of 'Sunny Yellow' and the doors and drawers have slim bar pulls.

St. Charles was one of the top manufacturers of custom metal cabinetry for mid century American kitchens and was the preferred brand of Frank Lloyd Wright. Metal kitchen cabinets were considered very modern beginning in the 1930s and were particularly popular after WWII when steel production capacity was high and became more available for the consumer market again.

This set of cabinets has a St. Charles paper label affixed to one base which also lists the architect for the house, built in 1957. Vlastimil Koubek (1927–2003) was a Czech American architect who opened a firm in Washington, DC, in 1957 and went on to design more than 100 office buildings, hotels, and apartments in the area.

Many of Koubek’s buildings are recognizable and familiar to DC area residents such as the World Building at 8121 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring; the building that was home to NPR from 1992 to 2008 at 635 Massachusetts Avenue NW; and modern glass paneled buildings such as the Brawner Building at 888 17th Street NW in Farragut Square, the Jefferson Building at 1225 19th Street NW, and the Barlow Building at 5454 Wisconsin Avenue in Chevy Chase.

Koubek also created the site plans for the Ames Center development in Rosslyn and was responsible for the renovation of the Willard Hotel which reopened in 1986. His obituary in the Washington Post in 2003 called him “one of Washington's most influential architects.”
