This antique hybrid tall case clock has a Seth Thomas movement from c. 1900 inside an unknown Federal style mahogany case. We suspect the case is older and had a different clock in it as the gong coil for the original clock is still in the case, though unused. The case may also be a Seth Thomas case, but we were unable to verify this.
This is a two-weight, chain driven, eight-day movement that chimes on the quarter hour. The face is a humble and gorgeous painted brass with hand painted floral motifs and is in excellent condition. It is clear the clock was well cared for.
The case is in very good to excellent condition with wear appropriate for its age. The key lock works. The slightly warped clock face door closes and includes original or old wavy glass. This case features a slim design, fluted quarter columns down its sides, and uncommon twisted flame finials atop a floral embellished crest.
We have found similar chain-driven 8 day clock movements in Seth Thomas catalogs dating to 1905, and we believe the case is possibly as old as the 1870s.
This clock includes some repair history, some dated cards inside that indicate recent service and repair, and a sheet of instructions that came from the previous owner. There are a few small pieces included with the clock. Please ask for the key at the sales desk.
The Seth Thomas Clock Company was incorporated in 1853 in Plymouth Hollow, CT, later named Thomaston in Seth Thomas' honor. The company was once one of the largest producers of clocks in the US, and made its cases and movements in Connecticut until the 1950s.
