Feast your eyes on this spectacular piece of history! A fully carved piece, in the style of R.J. Horner. A stately sideboard with a mirror on top. It has three carved panel doors flanked by two masterfully carved griffins. Each door has a stippled background, foliate scrolls and a carved griffin face. Below these paneled doors is a nice long drawer the length of the piece, with stunning quarter sawn or tiger oak graining, and beautifully carved wooden pulls, one on either end. Above the carved door panels are three smaller drawers flanked on either side by a small square pendant. Both outer drawers are missing the center piece of their carved pulls. One of these is with the piece and could be reattached by a skilled artisan, or used to mold new pulls.
The mirror that sits atop this sideboard is particularly spectacular. The mirror has very little wear on the glass itself, and it is possible it has been replaced as part of a recent restoration. The top shelf is supported by two winged griffins, perched on either end of the sideboard. The top frieze has beautiful foliate scrollwork, and nice angular beading to finish it off. The entire piece sits atop heavily carved animal feet.
This piece was likely crafted between 1890 and 1920. America was in a stylistic period heavily influenced by the Aesthetic movement abroad. The Aesthetic movement began around the time that Japan opened its doors after 250 years of isolation. With this opening, a strong interest in Japanese techniques and motifs began to arise. This artistic movement swept quickly through architecture, furniture and interior design, emphasizing the creation of art for art’s sake. The combination of Aesthetic frivolity and Victorian ornamentation created a very strong market for these carved pieces, and R.J. Horner led the parade with his carved griffins, acanthus leaves and opulent woodwork.
This piece does have an incomplete label on the back, conforming to the turn of the century style, but obscuring the maker. We suspect that it has been refinished at some point in its life. The sideboard doors are unlocked and it does not come with a key. There are a handful of small dents to the wood on top of the sideboard.
Please note: the center door has a broken hinge causing the door to not close fully.
