Berkey and Gay is very reputable company that began its foray into furniture making in the late 1860s in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area. Within 20 years, the company was winning awards for its residential furniture, advertising nationally and had showrooms in Grand Rapids and New York City. Berkey and Gay hosted a slew of dedicated craftsman, carvers and designers throughout its time, and had a strong reputation for quality craftsmanship.
The company kept well informed of trends and demand, and often produced pieces with a certain massiveness and strength. Many of their pieces required intricate and detailed carving, for which they employed both local and international carving masters. Berkey and Gay was very attentive to the quality of their work, and often used high end hardwoods such as mahogany and golden oak.
Tables like this massive carved one here were most often made as entire dining room suites, which may have included servers, sideboards or china cabinets. This set includes 1 armchair, 5 side chairs (6 chairs total), and 3 table leaves with a storage crate! An impressive amount of space is created with all 3 leaves in, and the box is a nice tidy way to store all the extras when not in use. The heavily carved legs give this table a definite stability and gravity, but also keep the mood fun and festive. The surface is in very good antique condition, with some normal age appropriate patina.
This is a true piece of history from the largest retail furniture manufacturer of the Grand Rapids region at the turn of the 19th century. Truly a treasure!
The armchair has one arm joint that needs to be reglued. The seat upholstery shows some wear and tear but chairs are in overall good condition. There are scuffs and wear to the finish of the wood consistent with the age of the furniture, especially on the legs (of the chairs and the table). See photos for details.
30" High, 46" Across, 60" Wide without leaves. Table comes with three 12-inch leaves. Seat height for side chairs is approximately 19".
